Antarctica NASA Satellite Earth Station | JC Photography NZ We were given the opportunity to tour the NASA Satellite Earth Station (SES) located at McMurdo, an American base in Antarctica. This laboratory is responsible for gathering data that forms the basis of 80% of weather forecasts in the United States and across the globe. Our initial stop was at the Satellite Dish on Arrival Heights, followed by a visit to the McMurdo laboratory where all collected data is processed and transmitted. Antarctica a Penguin molting at Pegasus Crush Site | JC Photography NZ We explored the Pegasus aircraft crash site yesterday evening. On October 8, 1970, the crew of the Pegasus, a C-121 Lockheed Constellation aircraft, encountered severe difficulties. A violent storm was battering the skies over Antarctica. The intense winds caused the plane to shake violently, tearing off parts of its outer structure. The Pegasus began plummeting towards the icy landscape below. It slammed into the ground and slid across the frozen surface before coming to a stop. Remarkably, all 80 passengers and crew members survived the crash without serious injuries. During our visit, we observed a solitary Emperor Penguin undergoing its molting process. Antarctica Marathon on Ice | JC Photography NZ The Ross Island Ice Shelf in Antarctica hosts a yearly ice marathon, possibly the world's southernmost running event. This remarkable race, set in a breathtaking environment, follows a route to Phoenix Airfields and back. Participants from Scott Base and McMurdo Station were joined by an unexpected fan: an Emperor Penguin that captured everyone's attention and impacted the runners' times. Antarctica Mt Erebus | JC Photography NZy NZ To kick off 2025, a bunch of us embarked on a 90-minute journey each way in the Hagglend to reach the base of Mount Erebus, at a spot known as Room With a View. Despite its name, there's no actual structure there, just an expansive hilltop offering a breathtaking panorama. It was an incredible way to begin the year, with the temperature hovering near 0 degrees on a stunning day. We experienced a unique sensation being in such close proximity to the imposing Mount Erebus, Earth's southernmost active volcano, which continuously emits smoke. During our return journey, we encountered a solitary Emperor penguin in the process of molting. Antarctica Scott Base Ski Field | JC Photography NZ With temperatures approaching 0 degrees, the Scott Base ski field officially commenced operations last week. It had been 27 years since my previous skiing experience, and although I was initially out of practice, I quickly regained my skills after a few runs. In addition to skiing at the field, we utilized our Hagglund vehicle to ascend to Castle Rock and then skied down the mountainside. Antarctica Helicopter at Scott Base | JC Photography NZ Scott Base serves as a hub for international scientists and researchers conducting fieldwork. The base's helicopter service plays a crucial role in their studies by transporting equipment to various sites and ferrying researchers to remote locations. In one instance, Heff, the pilot, delivered equipment loads in separate trips. On-site field and plant support personnel are responsible for unpacking and returning the cargo to the base. Antarctica Scott Base Drilling Field Trip | JC Photography NZ Sunday 8th December 2024, I assisted a pair of researchers with their fieldwork. Their study involves collecting ice and water samples at various depths beneath the frozen ocean floor. We needed to drill through 1.8m of ice to access the water below. Antarctica The Dry Valleys & Commonwealth Glacier | JC Photography NZ Friday 13th December 2024, I had the opportunity to assist in establishing a research camp in an extremely secluded area, 80 kilometers from Scott Base. We transported numerous pieces of equipment via helicopter to the McMurdo Dry Valleys. The Dry Valleys consist of a series of mostly snow-free valleys in Antarctica. They are characterized by exceptionally low humidity, and the surrounding mountains block ice flow from nearby glaciers. This region is considered one of the Earth's driest locations and is classified as one of the world's most extreme deserts. This experience has been the pinnacle of my Antarctic adventures so far. Never before have I been in such an isolated and remote location. The landscape and scenery were out of this world, and it was the most tranquil place I've ever encountered.
